Planning a trip to Eltz Castle?

If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting a real-life fairytale castle, this is it!

Tucked away in the forested hills of western Germany, Eltz Castle (Burg Eltz) is one of the most well-preserved and fairytale-like castles in Germany—and one of the most unique castles in Europe.

Surrounded by dense woodland and perched on a rocky hill above a river valley, it looks like something straight out of a storybook.

During our 7-day trip to Germany, my boyfriend Tim and I, along with our friends Abby and Deep, visited Eltz Castle as a day trip from Frankfurt—and even though it takes a bit more effort to get to, it ended up being one of the most unforgettable experiences of our entire trip.

    Why Visit Eltz Castle, Germany?

Burg Eltz from behind the trees

Unlike many castles in Germany, Eltz Castle has never been destroyed.

Dating back more than 800 years, it’s still owned by the same family (you guessed it, the Eltz family!) and has remained incredibly well preserved through centuries of war and change.

What makes Eltz Castle so special:

    • It’s one of the most well-preserved medieval castles in Germany
    • The setting is completely unique—hidden in a forest, not on a hilltop town
    • You can visit the interior on a guided Eltz Castle tour
    • It’s far less commercialized than castles like Neuschwanstein Castle

Honestly, it felt way more peaceful and authentic than we expected—especially compared to more famous castles in Germany.

👉 If you’re traveling to Munich and interested in visiting Neuschwanstein Castle, we did a Neuschwanstein Castle Day Trip from Munich and had an amazing time!

    Where Is Eltz Castle Located?

Friends at Eltz Castle in the Moselle Valley Germany

Eltz Castle is located in western Germany, between the towns of Koblenz and Trier in the scenic Moselle Valley.

It’s completely surrounded by forest, which is part of what makes visiting it feel so magical—but also why getting there takes a bit more planning.

Unlike many castles that feel more like museums, Burg Eltz still feels lived-in and authentic, making it a completely different experience from other popular castles in Germany.

If you’re planning how to visit Eltz Castle in Germany, just know it’s not located in a major city, so you’ll need to combine train + hiking or a drive into the countryside.

How to Get to Eltz Castle from Frankfurt

A view of Eltz Castle from below on our day trip from Frankfurt

Getting to Eltz Castle takes a bit of planning—but it’s completely doable as a day trip from Frankfurt.

🚆 How to Get to Eltz Castle by Train (Best Budget Option)

Taking the train is the most popular way to visit Eltz Castle without a car, and this is what we did.

I’ll be honest—figuring out how to get to Eltz Castle using public transportation felt a little confusing at first, but once we got going, it was actually pretty straightforward and ended up being part of the adventure.

Here’s exactly how to get to Eltz Castle from Frankfurt step-by-step:

    Step 1: Frankfurt → Koblenz

    • Take a Deutsche Bahn train from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to Koblenz
    • Travel time: ~1 hour
    • Trains run frequently throughout the day

    Step 2: Koblenz → Moselkern

    • Transfer to a regional train toward Trier
    • Get off at Moselkern station
    • Travel time: ~25–30 minutes

Step 3: Moselkern → Eltz Castle (Hike or Shuttle)

From Moselkern, you have two options:

🥾 Option 1: Hike to Eltz Castle (recommended)

    • Distance: ~1.5 miles (2.5 km)
    • Time: 45–60 minutes
    • Trail: Well-marked and scenic through the forest
    • This is the most popular and rewarding way to arrive

    🚌 Option 2: Bus + Shuttle

    • Take Bus 365 toward Burg Eltz parking area
    • Then walk (~15–20 minutes) or take the shuttle bus (€2 each way)

Total travel time: ~2–2.5 hours each way

Looking back, this ended up being one of our favorite travel days in Germany—not just because of the castle, but the whole journey getting there.

A Broad Recommendation: Download the Deutsche Bahn (DB Navigator) app to check train schedules and connections in real time.

🚗 Driving to Eltz Castle (Easiest Option)

If you have a rental car, driving is by far the easiest way to visit Burg Eltz.

    • Distance from Frankfurt: ~120 km (75 miles)
    • Drive time: ~1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours

Where to park: Park at the official Eltz Castle parking lot (Burg Eltz Parkplatz)

    From the parking area:

    • Walk 15–20 minutes downhill to the castle
    • OR take the shuttle bus (€2 each way)

The walk from the parking lot is short but incredibly scenic—and you’ll get that iconic first view of Eltz Castle along the way.

Eltz Castle isn’t the easiest place to reach—and that’s honestly part of what makes it so special.

The best time to visit Eltz Castle is early in the morning, right when it opens, to avoid crowds—especially during the busy summer months.

If you’re planning when to visit Burg Eltz, late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October) are ideal.

During these months, you’ll typically get mild weather, fewer crowds, and beautiful scenery in the surrounding forest.

Summer is the most popular time to visit Eltz Castle, which means larger tour groups and busier trails, especially midday.

Exploring the Eltz Castle grounds on a guided tour

Entry to Eltz Castle is only possible via a guided tour—and it’s absolutely worth it!

    The tour takes you through:

One of the best parts of visiting Eltz Castle is the hike to get there.

    • Distance: ~1.5 miles (2.5 km)
    • Time: 45–60 minutes
    • Difficulty: Easy to moderate

The trail is well-marked and takes you through a quiet forest in the Moselle Valley, gradually building up to the castle.

What to Pair with Your Eltz Castle Day Trip

Couples at the Braubach Wine Festival in the Rhine Valley in September

If you’re planning a full day trip to Eltz Castle from Frankfurt, you can easily turn this into a full-day adventure in the Moselle Valley.

A few ideas to pair with your visit:

    • The Geierlay Suspension Bridge (one of the longest suspension bridges in Germany)
    • A scenic drive through the Moselle Valley
    • A quick stop in Koblenz

After visiting Eltz Castle, we took the train to the small town of Braubach for lunch, hiked up to a viewpoint overlooking Marksburg Castle, and even stumbled into a local wine festival—which ended up being such a fun, unexpected highlight of the day.

If you have the time, I highly recommend adding a second stop like this—it made the day feel less like a quick out-and-back trip and more like a full experience in this part of Germany.

What to Wear for Eltz Castle

Sara of Travel A-Broads posing in front of Eltz Castle in the Moselle Valley

Since visiting Eltz Castle involves walking or hiking, what you wear actually matters more than you might expect.

    I recommend:

I wore my NAOT Women’s Sandals and was fine (these are really comfy and I’ve worn them all throughout Europe), but I’d still recommend sneakers or walking shoes for most people—especially if you plan to do the full hike.
