Planning to spend 1 day in Cologne, Germany?
If you’re visiting Frankfurt and looking for an easy, high-impact day trip, Cologne is one of the best options.
Located just over an hour away by train, it’s known for its stunning cathedral, riverside views, and vibrant city atmosphere.
My boyfriend, Tim, and I, along with our friends, Abby and Deep, and Tim’s cousin, Stacie, visited Cologne as a day trip from Frankfurt during our first trip to Germany, and even with just a few hours, we were able to see some of the city’s top highlights.
In this guide, I’m sharing exactly how to spend one day in Cologne—including what to see, what to skip, and tips to make the most of your time.
Why Visit Cologne on a Day Trip from Frankfurt?

Cologne (Köln) is one of the oldest cities in Germany and the fourth largest, with a history dating back more than 2,000 years.
While much of the city was destroyed during World War II, it has since been rebuilt into a lively cultural hub filled with museums, churches, and historic landmarks.
Today, it’s best known for the iconic Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dominates the city skyline—and conveniently sits right next to the train station.
Fun fact: Cologne was once one of the largest European cities in medieval and renaissance times.

1-Day Cologne Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

With just one day in Cologne, you’ll want to focus on the highlights—and luckily, most of them are within walking distance.
If you only have one day in Cologne, here’s how I recommend spending it:
- Morning: Cologne Cathedral + Old Town
- Midday: Hohenzollern Bridge + lunch by the river
- Afternoon: KölnTriangle views + exploring
This itinerary is based on our own visit and is perfect for first-time visitors who want to see the highlights without feeling rushed.
Now, let’s dive into the specifics!
Visit Cologne Cathedral

The Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the highlight of any visit—and you truly can’t miss it.
Located directly next to the train station, this massive Gothic cathedral is the tallest in Germany, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most visited landmarks in Europe.
Construction began in 1248 and took more than 600 years to complete, making it one of the most impressive Gothic structures in Europe.

You’ll be amazed by the cathedral’s beauty and grandeur right as you leave the train station.
Step inside to admire its soaring ceilings, intricate details, and historic treasures.
Don’t miss:
- The Shrine of the Three Kings: believed to contain the bones of the Three Wise Men
- The Gero Crucifix: the oldest large sculpture of the crucified Christ north of the Alps and the earliest known Western depiction of Christ on the cross while dead
- The Milan Madonna: depicts Mary and the child Jesus and is considered to work miracles

Next-door to the Cologne Cathedral are the remains of a Roman cellar from the 2nd or 3rd century AD.
The cellar was part of a private Roman house and one of the largest private cellars in Cologne.
If you have more time, this is worth a visit too.
⏰ Hours: 6:00 am – 8:00 pm
💵 Cost: Free
⏱️ Time to visit: 30 minutes – 1 hour
👉 We visited Cologne Cathedral on our own, but this Cologne City Tour Experience is a great option if you’re looking for a guided tour.
Walk Across Hohenzollern Bridge

Just a short walk from the cathedral, the Hohenzollern Bridge, which along with the Cologne Cathedral and the Rhine River, shapes the cityscape of Cologne, offers some of the best views in the city.
It’s Cologne’s oldest bridge and the only bridge in Cologne that wasn’t destroyed during the WWII bombings.
It’s famous for its thousands of love locks, placed by couples as a symbol of commitment.
In 2011, an estimated 40,000 padlocks adorned the bridge, but that number is believed to have exceeded several hundred thousand now—wow!
Don’t worry, though. Locks are regularly removed to ensure the bridge’s safety. So, you shouldn’t be wary about crossing it.
From here, you’ll also get incredible views of the cathedral across the Rhine River—perfect for photos!
⏰ Hours: 24/7
💵 Cost: Free
⏱️ Time to visit: 10–15 minutes
👉 The Hohenzollern Bridge is also included on this Cologne: Old Town Highlights Walking Tour.
Take in the Views from KölnTriangle

For the best panoramic views of Cologne, head to the KölnTriangle observation deck.
From the top, you’ll get incredible 360º views of the cathedral and the Rhine River stretching through the city.
A Broad Recommendation: If you’re planning to stay in Cologne for the night, schedule your visit to the KölnTriangle around sunset. But, be sure to get there early, as it does get crowded!
⏰ Hours: 11:00 am – 8:00 pm
💵 Cost: €5
⏱️ Time to visit: ~30 minutes (unless staying for sunset)
Explore the Old Town (Altstadt)
After hitting the main highlights, spend some time wandering Cologne’s charming Old Town (Altstadt).
This area is perfect for:
- Walking along the Rhine Promenade
- Grabbing lunch or a drink by the water
- Admiring colorful historic buildings
Key spots to check out include:
- Alter Markt: home to the Old Town Hall and beautiful Renaissance buildings
- Heumarkt: a historic square dating back to the Middle Ages
We ended up grabbing a yummy lunch along the Rhine Promenade at Restaurant Karibik and sat outside.
If you’re looking for a casual lunch spot during your 1 day in Cologne, this is a great option right along the river and the perfect way to relax and take in the views after a busy morning of sightseeing.

Try a Kölsch Beer
You can’t visit Cologne without trying a Kölsch!
This light, crisp beer is brewed locally and traditionally served in small glasses.
Interestingly, “Kölsch” also refers to the local dialect spoken in Cologne.
Head to a local brewery or riverside restaurant to experience it for yourself.
